Brand New Acute Care Tower Opens Doors at Oakland-Based Highland Hospital

It’s opening day for a brand new medical facility at Oakland-based Highland Hospital.

A 169-bed Acute Care Tower is the centerpiece of a nearly $670 million renovation project. The nine-story building will also house a family birthing center, including private labor and delivery rooms.

"Many of us are very excited about it – we're here in our family center, and the first baby will be born in this new unit today," said hospital spokesman Jerri Applegate.

The new hospital, where an opening ceremony was performed at 8 a.m. Monday, is replacing an older one that was opened in 1970.
